Throwback Thursday – My Market Bag

I have to be honest: I don’t make a lot of stuff for myself. I’m usually so busy making for others. This weeks Throwback Thursday post is one of my favorite projects, and one of the few things I made for myself…a ‪Market Bag.
bag3pA few years ago I had made a lot of Christmas gifts and had quite a bit of yarn leftovers. They sat in my stash waiting to be used. That summer my family took a trip to a local flea market and one of the things I noticed was that many of the sellers there had tyvek shopping bags for sale. There were a few sizes from the standard grocery size to large bags with wheels. My thought is usually “why would I buy something like that when I could make it myself?” But do I? Most of the time, no, and I end up buying one anyway.
bag1pBut this time I didn’t and when we got back home, I pulled out all those yarn leftovers from my stash and went to work. A few days later it was finished…and I loved how it came out. The colors worked great together and there was plenty of yarn to make a good, heavy duty bag. No problem carrying canned goods or veggies and nothing is going to fall through it.

Laying down this bag measures about 10 inches (26 cm) across on the bottom and
bag2pabout 21 inches (53 1/2 cm) across the top. It is about 11 inches (28 cm) deep and the handles measure about 7 inches (18 cm) wide. It is just a basic single crochet and I used double yarn throughout.

This was a great project for using leftover yarn, and a useful, heavy bag for all those goodies you get at the farmers markets! I still use it all the time and it remains one of my favorite project.

Do you have a favorite item you made for yourself? I’d love to hear about it! Share about it in the comments or link to the post on your blog!

Until next time, stay inspired and be crafy!

    1. Thanks! The colors fell together and I was so pleased. I like the crocheted bags for shopping because they wash much nicer than the standard fabric store bags and last a lot longer.
